The test

Combined Inspection and Testing (PAT Testing) is made up of two parts - Formal Visual Inspection and an electrical test. The Formal Visual Inspection must be made by a competent person and the results must be recorded.

The Formal Visual Inspection checks for:

Damage to the plug and casing (including evidence of overheating or burn marks, cracked casing, etc)Damage to the flexIncorrectly rated or damaged fuseIncorrectly wired plugSuitability of the appliance for the enviroment

Formal Visual Inspections may be required at different intervals to Combined Inspection and Testing, which include an electrical test as well as a Formal Visual Inspection. After the visual inspection, if required, a series of electrical tests would be carried out. These can vary according to the type and class of equipment used, but include:

Earth bond testingFlex polarity testInsulation Resistance TestEarth Leakage TestLoad (or Run) Test (to check the equipment powers up)Touch Leakage TestFunctional Test

Using a Seaward Europa tester, the results are downloaded to maintain an asset register for your equipment and a label printed and attached to the appliance. The label details whether the appliance has passed or failed the test, the date of the test and the recommended due date of the next test. Each item is assigned a barcode which makes repeat PAT Testing a simple process as all test parameters and previous test results are stored alongside the asset register. Any minor faults will be repaired and retested and any damage reported to the person responsible.
